We spent a breezy fall afternoon this weekend exploring the Green Thumb Organic Farm in Water Mill, NY–the source of our weekly CSA vegetable share. First, Farmer Bill took us on a hayride of the property, telling us about the farm’s history and longstanding commitment to growing a wide array of organic crops. Seeing the long rows of green leafy vegetables coming out of the soil was inspiring, and definitely made me appreciate all of the hard work that goes into the food we eat every day. (Last night, we made a delicious stir fry with pak choi, snow peas, and carrots–all from the farm.) After that, we got to pick our own pumpkin from an expansive field and had a picnic near the farm stand. If you’re in the area, make sure to stop by the Green Thumb. And if not, consider finding a CSA in your own neighborhood. It’s an important way to support local growers, eat healthy, and–if you can visit the farm itself–have a fun outdoor adventure with your family.
