When I read Pico Iyer’s article in The Guardian this weekend, Istanbul: Minarets and Martinis, it made me reminisce about my own trip to Turkey last April when I was about 6 months pregnant. If you’re looking for a springtime getaway–with or without the kids–consider spending 4 or 5 days in Istanbul plus a few more in Bodrum or Cappadocia. In Istanbul, I stayed at two hotels, both of which I’d highly recommend: Sirkeci Konak, near the Blue Mosque, and TomTom Suites just a few blocks from the Istiklal Caddesi. They happily accept children. Speaking of which, if you’re bringing the little ones, they’ll love the Grand Bazaar, Topkapi Palace, and a cruise on the Bosphorus. For other things to do, check out this list from Time Out. When you’re ready to take a break, stop at The House Cafe for a mint lemonade with sliced green apples on top. Yum.
I’ll be posting more trip suggestions as I sort through the huge pile of brochures and business cards I gathered at the New York Times Travel Show this weekend. And if you haven’t entered our Chewbeads giveaway yet, there’s still time!
